Abstinence v. Sex Education, Why not both?

Wrap it before you tap it or wed ‘em before you spread ‘em? Come on, it’s almost Spring Break so you knew this was coming sooner or later. As we approach the season that’s come to embody every cliché from flowers, warmth and sunshine, and hot pants with Gucci glasses lets recall one fundamental association: The birds and the bees.

I’ve had what could be called the dubious honor of participating in both sex education and abstinence only programs since I came to high school. Besides the obvious awkwardness of learning southern human anatomy and condom application I found the Planned Parenthood informative without being preachy or insulting to teenagers. So when the abstinence only program visited I expected the same dedication and respect to students only with a different message. I was severely disappointed. Instead I get a full picture of what gonorrhea looks like and am told that if I get anywhere near the “underwear zone” I’d soon be getting more familiar with gynecologists.

Donald G. Smith once said that common sense and education are highly compatible; in fact neither is worth much without the other. You’d have to be more than a few fries short of a happy meal to honestly believe that if you preached that kind of rhetoric exclusively and snobbishly every teenager is going to fall on their knees and embrace chastity. I would give a months pay to know how many kids come out of the class laughing at the scare tactics or simply shaking their heads in offense. Do adults really think we’re that gullible and naïve?

Teenagers have an almost mandatory rebellious and skeptical nature and the fact is that while proponents argue that comprehensive sex education encourages teens to have premarital sex teaching abstinence only is just as likely to have the same effect. There is nothing wrong with waiting until marriage but marriage isn’t right for everyone. Sadly it’ll  most likely be another few years before us gays and lesbians are given equal rights and can get married anywhere besides Massachusetts and others just have on desire to. No one thing is right for everyone, that’s why Communism never works and why having premarital sex isn’t right for everyone as well. Instead of force feeding our beliefs, morals, and principles on teenagers we should provide both forms of education and let them make a choice that is ultimately theirs alone to make.

Perhaps its all wishful thinking, perhaps its all an agenda but agendas need not necessarily be bad. Whatever students choose to stick with this season, just make sure to leave the procreation to the rabbits.
This is my editorial from Issue 10 of my High School paper. I do mainly humourous editorials as opposed to persuasive or informative.

You make a very good point there, playgroundskiddles. i'm catholic, and i have to listen to my religion teacher go on and on and on about how planned parent hood is supposingly "evil". I just shake my head... it's not like they are encouraging sex, it's just that if you make want to, they have what you need, which is a good idea. i like your way of thinking! :D
